Bakers put the "bun" into fundraising

Bakers Delight bakers across Australia are set to bake over 432,000 hot cross buns on Saturday 24 March, to raise money for sick kids at the children’s hospitals across the country.

On ‘Bundraiser Day’ 615 Bakers Delight bakeries nationwide will donate $1 from every six-pack of hot cross buns sold to raise over $128,000 for essential medical equipment for the hospitals.

Bakers Delight’s support in NSW will be put towards the  Sydney Children’s Hospital, enabling them to purchase a Ligasure, specifically used in children’s kidney transplants.

Dr Fiona Mackie, Head of the Renal Department at, said, “Every year, five patients require a kidney transplant at Sydney Children’s Hospital. In many cases, the parents of those patients donate what is possibly the greatest gift of all – their kidney. This vital surgical equipment will benefit this important group of patients.

“Thanks to Bakers Delight, we can provide our children with access to the best medical equipment during this complex life-saving operation, allowing our patients to experience a better quality of life,” Dr Mackie said.

Young patients at the Hospital are looking forward to eating hot cross buns and raising lots of money through this year’s Bundraiser, including six-year-old Viena Woodstone, who is being treated at the hospital for an extremely rare form of epilepsy. She suffers seizures almost every three minutes, and her blood is not able to absorb oxygen properly.

Chris Caldwell, General Manager of Operations added, “Easter is by far our busiest time of the year, so it’s a great opportunity to give back to the hospitals across the country and make a difference to the lives of children like Viena.

“We’ve set ourselves a goal of surpassing our Bundraiser fundraising effort from last year and we’ll be busy baking to achieve that. We encourage all our customers to make their hot cross bun purchase count on March 24.”

Nationally, hospitals set to benefit from Bakers Delight’s fundraising efforts include:

  • Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal (VIC)
  • Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation (NSW)
  • John Hunter Hospital (Newcastle, NSW)
  • Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation (QLD)
  • Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation (WA)
  • Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation (SA)
  • Royal Hobart Hospital (TAS)
  • The Canberra Hospital (ACT)

For 32 years Bakers Delight bakers have been baking fresh hot cross buns from scratch, each day in the lead up to Easter, this year will be no different with Traditional, Fruitless and Choc Chip varieties available.
